Ettinger was / is brilliant, but was also foundationally wrong about quite a few important ideas. I think he's wrong about the possibilities of uploading, and his "carbon-centric" bias for awareness, but to be fair we can't know this now. What we CAN know now is that he was jaw-droppingly wrong about the financial piece of cryonics, thinking the costs would be trivial. He speaks of costs of a few thousand dollars, not considering multiple factors that are obvious now and should have been obvious even when he wrote these speculations. Even brilliant minds are domain specific, and can be surprisingly naive outside of their domains.
